Welcome Fourth Grade Designers!
We have some exciting work ahead of us. We are going to take some time to think like scientists and engineers.
Engineers are constantly looking for ways to make buildings stronger. Not only do buildings need to be able to withstand the natural elements like wind, rain, heat, and snow, they also need to be able to support the activities that take place inside of them. Buildings must be built to last. In order to create a building that can support a heavy load, engineers must research and test several structures before building. You and your team must step into the shoes of the engineers. Use this website to research buildings that are able to support a heavy load. Come up with a plan to create the frame of a skyscraper that can hold a certain amount of weight.
Task:
Research, plan, build, test and rebuild to create the tallest skyscraper, made of nothing but straws and tape, that can hold 1 cup of water for 30 seconds.
Remember to use the research to guide the building of your structure.
Be creative and work cooperatively!
Good Luck,
Mrs. Coleman
